Dering Harbor — Western Shore
Dering Harbor is one of the most protected anchorages in the region, with excellent holding ground and easy access to Shelter Island Sound. The Shelter Island Yacht Club is located here, and the harbor hosts a mix of sailing yachts, cruisers, and classic wooden vessels. Protected water means less spray exposure but warm conditions that encourage biological growth below the waterline.
Coecles Harbor — Eastern Shore
Coecles Harbor on the eastern side offers quieter, more private anchorage with access to Gardiners Bay. Deeper, cooler water reduces fouling somewhat compared to Dering, but the harbor’s eastern exposure brings more wind and chop on prevailing southwesterlies. Vessels need solid UV protection given their exposure to open sky.

How do you handle the ferry crossing with your equipment?
We transport all our professional equipment via the Greenport or North Haven ferry. We plan routes to carry everything in a single crossing and have done this routinely for years. There is no additional ferry cost passed to clients — it is part of our standard service.
Can you detail a vessel at a private estate dock?
Yes — in fact, the majority of our Shelter Island work is at private estate docks rather than marina facilities. We require access to a water source (hose bib) and a stable dock surface. We manage all runoff appropriately and leave the property exactly as we found it.
Is teak restoration worth it for an older vessel?
For most vessels with teak in reasonable condition, yes. Well-maintained teak significantly enhances a vessel’s value and appearance. We assess plank thickness before recommending sanding — if planks are too thin, we will recommend conservation cleaning and sealing instead to extend their life.
Do you offer recurring maintenance programs?
